Employing time travel in a role playing game can be a unique challenge though, and itвЂ™s certainly one that is worthy of discussion.Д«efore jumping into a discussion on how to employ time travel in a game I think itвЂ™s important to talk about the first time traveler. Wizards armed with enchanted hourglasses, the crews of advanced starships, deloreans, mad scientists, cyborg assassins, superheroes capable of traveling at incredible speeds, metahumans, and gods all seem to think that the timeline is their personal playground. HeвЂ™s hardly the only one jumping from one era to the next though. All you have to do is jump into the Tardis, press a few buttons, and before you can say allons-y youвЂ™re having tea with Queen Elizabeth and saving Shakespeare from a coven of actual witches. The Doctor makes time travel seem like such an easy thing. The game works really well in that regard because if M&M has a weakness itвЂ™s that newer players can get confused by some of the rules. So why get into DC Adventures? I think it is a better game to set in front of players who are completely new to RPGs as they can flip open the book, find their favorite characters and start playing without getting confused by character creation. You also have the option of simply buying Mutants and Masterminds which is much less expensive and contained in a single volume which would allow you to create the characters on your own. When the books all fall in the forty and fifty dollar price range it may take a bit of saving to gather the funds for them. The major weakness is that the books are all fairly expensive, and to my mind you need all of them as the GM if you want to be effective. Now if youвЂ™re a big DC fan and youвЂ™re looking to battle it out with Brainiac or to try and stop the Lex Luthor from taking over the world this is a great system. There were several books published for the game including The HeroвЂ™s Handbook, a detailed guide to the DC universe, and several volumes filled with the stats for DC characters. ThatвЂ™s probably one of the reasons that DC Comics chose to use it as the basis for the DC Adventures game which allowed players to take on the roles of characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and other DC characters. Mutants and Masterminds is probably the best superhero RPG out there if youвЂ™re looking for something that is incredibly adaptable and allows you to build a rich immersive world and fill it with complex characters. IвЂ™ll be using Mutants and Masterminds 3rd Edition to create the characters in case anyone is interested. For the moment IвЂ™m thinking this will be a monthly feature, but if it proves popular I might make it a weekly thing. If you want a particular version of a character from a certain universe, for example Iceman from the Ultimate X-Men as opposed to Iceman from the 616 universe please make that clear. People can suggest a hero or a villain by posting a comment, sending an email to or using your psychic powers to contact me telepathically. I thought it might be fun to start a new feature on the Out of Character blog, and IвЂ™m calling it Make Mine a Hero. I know thereвЂ™s a ton of crossover between tabletop RPG fans and comic book fans because whenever I off to run a Mutants and Masterminds game or any other superhero based RPG people are always on board with that idea.
